Dear Friend,
Please allow me to introduce myself to you. My name is Kim Denmark, of Dayton, Ohio. I am the woman walking across America. My goal of walking across America is to dramatize the need for change as it relates to working poor, welfare reform, homelessness and poverty.
My goals include encouraging mothers on welfare to get off and become self sufficient with resources available in their city and state. Although much assistance is available already, I feel fewer obstacles should be a factor in permitting qualified candidates to make this transition less stressful.
To date I have walked over 74 months and approximately 2,800 miles. I have completed 15 states (OH, IN, PA, MD, VA, WV, IL,D.C., NJ, NY, NC, SC, DE, AL, GA), and currently I am walking through the state of Florida. I am committed to completing the entire United States of America, including Canada, minus Hawaii.
In visiting some cities and states, I receive support of the Mayor, Governor, churches, businesses, organizations and the general public. However, my main focus is to visit the homeless shelters, soup kitchens, Human Services Departments, and other points of interest where I can receive documentation and hear live testimonies from the public regarding their struggle of working "pay check to pay check", yet are faced with the pitfalls of not having enough income to sustain themselves and family.
My goal is to acquire 1 million signatures on my petition, and to appeal to the United States Congress initiating focus on
America's poor relating to good jobs, decent wages, health care (insurance) for families transitioning from the welfare roles, to good quality jobs all while becoming viable for independence and a part of America's dream.
I hope that you will receive my message, as I come in peace and leave with hope. Thank you in advance, I invite you to travel with me across America.
